Serena and Venus Williams are arguably the most popular siblings in the tennis world. In between the two of them, the Williams sisters have a collective 30 Grand Slam titles. They have also become successful in their own right outside the tennis court through numerous endorsement deals and entrepreneurial efforts. Due to their busy schedules, a lot of people are asking how they are able to stay in shape.

Serena William’s plant-based program

Serena William’s continued dominance in tennis can be largely attributed to her healthy lifestyle. Her diet, for example, is largely plant-based. Her love of plant-based food is actually her following the footsteps of her sister Venus and fellow tennis legend Novak Djokovic.

What Serena eats

For her first meal of the day, she mixes oats with fruits like strawberries. For lunch, she makes a salad that is made up of pita croutons, tomatoes, spinach, almonds, and lettuce. She then ends her day with a dinner of brown rice with hemp, chia seeds, and a salad.

While she tries to stick with her diet most of the time, Williams admits that she has her cheat days too. On her good days, she tries to limit her cheat meals to fish and chicken so she can get more protein. But there are just some times when she just cannot stop herself from ordering pizza, fried chicken, or tacos.

Venus William’s raw vegan diet

Serena started getting interested in plant-based food because of Venus. Eight years ago, Venus was diagnosed with Sjogren’s Syndrome. It is an autoimmune disorder that results in the massive drying of the throat, mouth, and eyes. To help her manage it, she started going vegan. This enabled her to return to professional tennis within a few months.

While she started going vegan due to health reasons, Venus has embraced the lifestyle. She mentions celery-root soup as among her favorite vegan recipes.

Novak Djokovic’s passion for healthy food

Meanwhile, Djokovic has also become one of the most prominent vegan celebrities right now. While he does not strictly call himself a vegan, he confessed to having been on a plant-based diet for years now.

He experimented with plant-based food after discovering that he has an intolerance to dairy and refined sugars. Back then, the news shocked Djokovic because he used to eat a lot of bread growing up. In fact, his family owns a pizza restaurant when he was a teenager.

But he had to go vegan because he has noticed how much his allergies affected his performance. He said that he would notice how low his energy is most of the time. He would even experience vomiting and blurred vision.
